Coordinating, Managing, and Empowering TAs in Large Enrollment Courses

Teaching Assistants are essential to student engagement and success, especially in large courses. This workshop focuses on optimizing TA performance to enhance the student experience and streamline instructor responsibilities to help reduce and support a more balanced workload. Topics include TA hour allocation, effective communication, grade normalization, and more. Join us to explore strategies for empowering your TAs and ensuring a productive, supportive learning environment.

Leveraging Educational Technologies to Support Communication, Grading, and Feedback 

Interested in learning about tools and technologies that can support communication, grading, and feedback in larger classes? Register for OpenEd's August 2024 workshops focused on leveraging educational technologies, including new CourseLink tools for grading and communication, PEAR for peer review, and Gradescope for both exams and written assessments.

OTL to Host A Pedagogy of Kindness Book Club for Faculty, Staff & Instructors

During the Fall 2024 semester, the Office of Teaching and Learning will be hosting an in-person and virtual book club to discuss A Pedagogy of Kindness (Denial, 2024). Book club discussions are open to all University of Guelph faculty, staff, and instructional staff (including teaching assistants and sessionals). At each meeting, book club members will take part in a facilitated discussion of one chapter of the book and discuss your thoughts, questions or share experiences from their own classes. Register by September 17th. Space is limited.

Join us in September for a series of virtual workshops for undergraduate and graduate Teaching Assistants to help prepare you with the teaching-related skills, knowledge, and tools you’ll need to be successful in your TA roles.

  • Communication, Professionalism and Starting the Semester Strong: September 5th, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

  • Effective Lesson Planning for Labs and Seminars: September 9th, 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM

  • Leading and Facilitating Discussions: September 9th, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Final Reminder: Applications are Open for the Early Career Faculty Community of Practice

We are excited to announce the inaugural Early Career Faculty (ECF) Community of Practice (CoP), a transformative program co-sponsored by the Office of Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Associate Vice-President Academic. 

About the Program: The ECF CoP is designed to support early career faculty in their professional development as educators and leaders. Through this cross-disciplinary, relationship-rich experience, participants will engage in continuous learning, reflective teaching practices, and build connections across the university community. 

Program Structure: The CoP will meet monthly from September 2024 to June 2025. Each session, facilitated by Educational Developers and invited guests, will provide a space for discussing various topics such as reflective practice, teaching with technology, course design, inclusive pedagogies, and more.  

Eligibility: We invite full-time, tenure-track faculty members, veterinarians, and teaching librarians at the University of Guelph, Guelph-Humber, or Ridgetown to apply. Applicants should be teaching at least one course during the program and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and innovative teaching practices.
