OTL Announcements

Announcing the 2022/23 Learning Enhancement Fund (LEF) Call for Proposals

Since its inception in 2006, the Learning Enhancement Fund (LEF) has provided funding to support and enrich the learning experience of our undergraduate students. The Associate Vice-President (Academic), and the Office of Teaching and Learning are again pleased to announce the call for proposals to the LEF.

The LEF competition considers submissions designed to support any aspect of curriculum renewal and innovation that is scalable and sustainable. Projects that highlight novel teaching and learning strategies and assessments used in alternate course delivery modes (e.g., hyflex/blended) or that transfer effective elements from alternate modes to in-person teaching are particularly encouraged.

Please submit your completed proposal via email to the AVPA’s office no later than 4:00pm February 25th 2022, using the downloadable proposal and budget templates available on the OTL website. We welcome and look forward to new LEF applicants.

U of G SoTL Spotlight

Researchers from the Ontario Veterinary College and the School of Engineering recently published a study comparing the effectiveness of instructor feedback with self-assessment for psychomotor skill development. The researchers found that student confidence in their ability to complete the skill improved in both conditions, but students’ abilities to perform the skill (as rated by expert observers) were stronger in the instructor feedback condition. This research highlights the importance of instructor feedback in skill development. The researchers were supported by a Learning Enhancement Fund grant to Dr. Carolyn Kerr and Dr. Deep Khosa.

Book image: Decolonizing Education: Nourishing the Learning Spirit by Marie Battiste

From March 2022 to July 2022, OTL will host a small virtual book club for faculty and instructional staff. Join us as we collectively read and discuss the book Decolonizing Education: Nourishing the Learning Spirit (Battiste, 2013). The book club is intended to provide instructors with a virtual space to share resources and ideas related to Indigenizing and decolonizing our teaching practices. We ask book club members to commit to reading the book, attending the monthly meetings, and sharing their knowledge. For more information about the book club, and to register, visit our website.
