The One Health Institute is pleased to welcome Peter Kelly to the team as our interim Program Manager.
Peter brings years of management experience and a true passion for nature, photography, and travelling. In fact, he has taken photographs on all seven continents!

Lasting lemur conservation relies on multiple agents
Most people’s only exposure to lemurs is through the movie Madagascar, which doesn’t give an accurate representation of the endangerment they are facing and the way that their environments and interactions with humans contribute to this problem. Prof. Travis Steffens from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology is passionate about understanding these relationships.

More songbirds may sing thanks to agricultural restoration
Songbird populations have been on the decline for the past fifty years, but a new integrated approach to the problem may help reverse this trend. Prof. Amy Newman from the Department of Integrative Biology has partnered with ALUS, an agricultural land restoration organization, to help improve songbird health and biodiversity.

Teamwork tackles troubling, complex health issue in rural Kenya
Pigs, poverty, and epilepsy. Likely not a combination that is clear to most but one that the Director of the One Health Institute and Ontario Veterinary College Prof. Cate Dewey spent over ten years studying in rural Kenya.

One Health Population Medicine MSc. Position Available
Piloting a framework to guide collaborative management of complex One Health issues at the wildlife, domestic animal and/or human interface.
A 2-year MSc opportunity, commencing in May 2020, is available in the Department of Population Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College. This position will be co-supervised by Drs. Jane Parmley and Cathy Bauman.
The focus of this MSc will be to apply and evaluate a new tool kit outlining best practices and steps for putting a One Health approach into practice.
Review of applications will begin March 1st, 2021. Further details available on the Department's website.

Global Burden of Animal Diseases Project Launch
On Tuesday 19th January 2021 The University of Liverpool and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) hosted the official launch of the GBADs Programme. The webinar celebrates the achievements of the GBADs collaborators to date and showcases the planned work of Programme as rollout phase begins. Watch the full launch webinar here.
Two U of G faculty play key roles in this Programme, Dr. Deborah Stacey from the School of Computer Science and Dr. Theresa Bernardo from the Department of Population Medicine. We had the pleasure of hearing from them in the Fall 2020 Seminar Series.

CPHAZ Student Mentorship Event
The Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses (CPHAZ) is hosting a Student Mentorship event throughout the winter semester months from January to April 2021. This is an opportunity for University of Guelph students to interact with different One Health professionals in academia, public health, and research sectors. The event will be virtual using Microsoft Teams and there is limited enrollment, so don't wait too long to register! SARS-CoV-2 Surveillance in Pets Study
Drs. Scott Weese and Dorothee Bienzle from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph are recruiting Canadian veterinary clinic staff who have had COVID-19 themselves for a study to learn more about the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from people to their own pets (dogs, cats, ferrets).

Winter 2021 Seminar Series - Wildlife, Wild Places, & Spillover: Insights from the Field

We are so fortunate to welcome Dr. Emily Denstedt as our second speaker of the Winter 2021 OHI Seminar Series. Dr. Denstedt currently works with the Wildlife Conservation Society in Laos.
The decline of wild species and degradation of ecosystems, coupled with the encroachment of humankind into the planet’s remaining wild places, is opening the door for disease and other health challenges. Dr. Denstedt's seminar will give you an inside look into how conservation-based health experts are working to identify where and how these health risks are emerging, while taking action towards the conservation of biodiversity and intact landscapes.

National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine One Health Workshop
February 23 - 25, 2021 | Virtual
The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine presents their FREE workshop titled, "Systematizing the One Health Approach in Preparedness and Response Efforts for Infectious Disease Outbreaks".
It will examine ways to systematize and integrate the One Health approach as part of outbreak prevention, detection, preparedness, and response efforts.

2020 Hammond Lecture - Wastes, Water, and Food: The One Health Links to Human and Wildlife Health

The One Health Institute was thrilled to collaborate with the University of Guelph’s School of Environmental Sciences to put on the 2020 Hammond Lecture.
The event featured keynote speaker Dr. Karen Kidd who holds the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair in Environmental Health and is a Professor jointly in the Department of Biology and the School of Earth, Environment and Society at McMaster University. She was joined by University of Guelph panelists Dr. Paul Sibley (School of Environmental Sciences), Dr. Heather Murphy (Department of Pathobiology), and Dr. Claire Jardine (Department of Pathobiology).
