Peter brings years of management experience and a true passion for nature, photography, and travelling. In fact, he has taken photographs on all seven continents!

Lasting lemur conservation relies on multiple agents

Most people’s only exposure to lemurs is through the movie Madagascar, which doesn’t give an accurate representation of the endangerment they are facing and the way that their environments and interactions with humans contribute to this problem. Prof. Travis Steffens from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology is passionate about understanding these relationships.

More songbirds may sing thanks to agricultural restoration

Songbird populations have been on the decline for the past fifty years, but a new integrated approach to the problem may help reverse this trend. Prof. Amy Newman from the Department of Integrative Biology has partnered with ALUS, an agricultural land restoration organization, to help improve songbird health and biodiversity.

Teamwork tackles troubling, complex health issue in rural Kenya

Pigs, poverty, and epilepsy. Likely not a combination that is clear to most but one that​ the Director of the One Health Institute and Ontario Veterinary College Prof. Cate Dewey spent over ten years studying in rural Kenya.

Obesity debates ignoring disease complexity, researcher says

Losing weight may be a top New Year's resolution, but as University of Guelph Philosophy Prof. Gus Skorburg points out, lasting solutions must consider more than just the individual and their habits.

Piloting a framework to guide collaborative management of complex One Health issues at the wildlife, domestic animal and/or human interface.

A 2-year MSc opportunity, commencing in May 2020, is available in the Department of Population Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College. This position will be co-supervised by Drs. Jane Parmley and Cathy Bauman.  

The focus of this MSc will be to apply and evaluate a new tool kit outlining best practices and steps for putting a One Health approach into practice.

On Tuesday 19th January 2021 The University of Liverpool and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) hosted the official launch of the GBADs Programme. The webinar celebrates the achievements of the GBADs collaborators to date and showcases the planned work of Programme as rollout phase begins. Watch the full launch webinar here.

Two U of G faculty play key roles in this Programme, Dr. Deborah Stacey from the School of Computer Science and Dr. Theresa Bernardo from the Department of Population Medicine. We had the pleasure of hearing from them in the Fall 2020 Seminar Series.

The Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses (CPHAZ) is hosting a Student Mentorship event throughout the winter semester months from January to April 2021. This is an opportunity for University of Guelph students to interact with different One Health professionals in academia, public health, and research sectors. The event will be virtual using Microsoft Teams and there is limited enrollment, so don't wait too long to register! Drs. Scott Weese and Dorothee Bienzle from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph are recruiting Canadian veterinary clinic staff who have had COVID-19 themselves for a study to learn more about the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from people to their own pets (dogs, cats, ferrets).

National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine One Health Workshop

February 23 - 25, 2021 | Virtual

The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine presents their FREE workshop titled, "Systematizing the One Health Approach in Preparedness and Response Efforts for Infectious Disease Outbreaks".

It will examine ways to systematize and integrate the One Health approach as part of outbreak prevention, detection, preparedness, and response efforts.
