COVID-19 Update

U of G's COVID-19 Updates help keep you informed of the University's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. They provide useful information to help you navigate life at U of G throughout the academic year.

Thanksgiving and the fall study break are just around the corner. It's time to start thinking about how to celebrate safely.

How your plans affect your social circle

If you're heading home for the Thanksgiving and fall study break, give some thought to how you'll keep yourself and the people you care about safe.

The 10-person social circle you're now part of may not include the people you're planning to spend time with over the break. Remember, whenever you add someone to your social circle, your circle expands to include everyone in that person's circle, too. It doesn't take much to quickly pass the 10-person limit.

On Twitter, @thoughtsofaphd has a great visual example of how social circles can get out of control if you don't form them properly.

In a recent statement, the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada said, "Every person we encounter brings a whole network of contacts history with them, so any and all efforts to reduce the number, duration and closeness of encounters makes a big difference."

If you're living away from home and have a social circle with your housemates or friends, when you get back to Guelph you'll need to safely re-establish that circle. That means following proper physical distancing rules and wearing a face covering when you're around others until you're sure everyone is healthy.

We get it: this isn't easy! But by following the rules, we can help keep everyone safe. We promise it's worth it.

Celebrating locally

This is a great time to try something new! If you're living in Guelph and decide to stay in town over the break, why not:

  • Plan to join your family's Thanksgiving meal by video chat
  • Join your crew for an online games night
  • Host a Friendsgiving with your housemates
    • Try your hand in the kitchen - This is the perfect year to learn how to cook a turkey yourself. And to help, Student Experience is giving away a $50 MarketFresh gift card on Instagram!
    • Pick up a full Thanksgiving dinner from Hospitality Services for $16.49 per person (book yours online by 5 p.m. today)
    • Check out a local restaurant for dine-in or takeaway. Student Wellness and Student Experience are giving away a $50 restaurant gift card on Instagram!
    • Remember to stay within the provincial regulations for gathering sizes. Local Public Health recommends no more than 10 people indoors or outdoors based on the average Guelph home size.

This Thanksgiving is different than any other we've had, but with some creativity, it can be a great break!
