2019 was a year of discovery, exploration, community and outreach for the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. From international awards to national television and influencing policy, we present a look back at some of our top read stories from the year (ranked in order of readership).

Statistics prof. Zeny Feng and her collaborators from the department of animal biosciences are using mathematical models to improve the cost-effectiveness of pig genotyping.

November 25, 2019
Four CEPS students worked with a cohort of more than 30 from across campus to tackle the question: Can Guelph break free from plastic? On November 22, they pitched their strategic approach to an audience of peers and politicians, including mayor Guthrie and senator Black.

Physics prof. Alexandros Gezerlis and his research team recently shed new light on the properties of neutron stars, the strongest magnets in the universe, by calculating their weight.

8. 2019 Awards Night

November 8, 2019
The College hosted its annual Awards Night to celebrate its high achieving students. The evening also featured CEPS trivia, a reception and an opportunity to recognize philanthropic contributions from friends of CEPS.

7. FPL Best Paper Award

October 3, 2019
Professors Shawki Areibi (School of Engineering) and Gary Grewal (School of Computer Science) received the Michal Servit Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Field Programmable Logic and Applications (FPL Conference), making them the first research group to win this award two years in a row.

6. 2019 CEPS 3MT College Heat Winners

March 23, 2019
The CEPS presenters who moved forward to the University of Guelph 3MT® Final Competition included: PhD Candidate Saipriya Ramalingam for her presentation titled Toxic Seafood and Beyond; and MSc student Jennifer Crha for her presentation titled Vaccines at Guelph.

5. Student on National TV

December 11, 2019
Fourth-year Bachelor of Science (Physics major) student Melanie Hudakoc and her dynamic family were on an episode of the newly launched Family Feud Canada. Melanie leveraged her background in physics when competing on the show.

Engineering prof. Mario Martinez and his research team have developed a new method to modify starch to slow its digestion when incorporated into baked goods without compromising their taste and texture.

3. Vector Scholarships in Artificial Intelligence Winners from CEPS

Four CEPS Master’s Students have received a Vector Scholarship in Artificial Intelligence (VSAI): Syeda Manjia Tahsien, Hannah Szentimrey, Arslan Kazmi, and Wanron Sun.

2. A Golden Opportunity to Fight Climate Change

January 31, 2019
Gold-based nanomaterials could reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide. Chemistry prof. Aicheng Chen and his research team converted CO2, one of the primary greenhouse gases, into carbon monoxide (CO), which is a chemical that is useful for several industrial processes.

1. Faculty Award Winners

June 24, 2019
The inaugural CEPS faculty awards were presented to seven faculty members on June 20, 2019. The winning faculty included Mario Martinez, Animesh Dutta and Andrea Bradford (Engineering), Hermann Eberl, Daniel Ashlock and Lorna Deeth (Mathematics and Statistics), and Vladimir Ladizhanksy (Physics).
