Call for Posters: University of Guelph Students! Do you have a water-focused poster topic? Feature your work at World Water Day! Gift-card prizes are available for the posters that best fit the theme. To submit your poster, register via the Eventbrite link above, and when prompted, enter your name, you advisor’s name, and your poster’s title. Posters should be 3ft wide by 4ft tall (there is some room for variations if you’d like to adjust the dimensions).
About World Water Day: Groundwater provides 30% of Canada’s water supply and more than half of all drinking water worldwide, but little is known about this critically important resource, and it is threatened by contamination, overuse, and climate change. To bring awareness to this vital but unseen resource, the United Nations has declared 2022 the year of groundwater, dedicating its annual World Water Day event to Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible. We invite you to join us on March 22, 2022 to amplify the importance of sustainable groundwater management.
The day-long event will highlight ongoing global issues with a local focus. The City of Guelph and surrounding region relies on bedrock aquifers for its public water supply, making groundwater extremely important to public health and well-being. 2022 also marks the 20th anniversary of the Walkerton Inquiry Report, and we will reflect on progress that has been made to implement its recommendations in the Province. We will also look ahead to the next steps in groundwater management, including ensuring safe drinking water for First Nations communities and in private wells, and groundwater’s role in environmental protection, food security, and agriculture.
Keynote Speaker
Dr. Mark Borchardt is a Research Microbiologist with the USDA – Agricultural Research Service. He is also Program Leader for the Laboratory for Infectious Disease and the Environment, an interagency laboratory with the US Geological Survey. Dr. Borchardt’s expertise is on the measurement, fate, transport and health effects of human pathogens in the environment. Recently, he received the Dr. John L. Leal award from the American Water Works Association for his work on improving water quality and protecting public health in the United States.
