Please join us in warmly welcoming Owen Wooding (he/him) and Dr. Rachael Lewitzky (she/her) to the Office of Teaching and Learning team! As Instructional Technology Specialists (ITS), they play a pivotal role in fostering thoughtful and strategic discussions on pedagogy and educational technology. The ITS team joined OTL from Open Learning and Educational Support (OpenEd), where they provided support and guidance to instructors related to the use of educational technology in the context of teaching and learning. They will continue to collaborate closely with educators to explore, implement, and evaluate technology-driven solutions that enrich the teaching and learning experience.

Information about centrally-supported teaching and learning tools (e.g., Gradescope, iClicker Cloud, PEAR) can currently be found on the OpenEd Teaching and Learning Technologies website. Web content from the OpenEd site that aligns with OTL’s portfolio will be moved to the OTL website in the coming months. To request a consultation related to educational technology, please contact Owen and Rachael at edtech@uoguelph.ca.
Our new resource on Difficult Conversations in the Classroom was created in partnership with the Office of Diversity and Human Rights, Learning and Development, and Student Experience. This resource guides instructors through possible causes, types, and stages of difficult conversations in the classroom. It also contains practices and prompts designed to enhance personal awareness, as well as strategies to implement directly in the classroom as part of one's teaching practice.
OTL to Host Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning Book Club for UofG
During the Winter 2025 semester, OTL will be hosting an in-person and virtual book club to discuss Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (Blum, 2020). Book club discussions are open to all University of Guelph faculty and instructional staff (including teaching assistants and sessionals). At each meeting, book club members will take part in a facilitated discussion of one or two essays in the book and discuss thoughts, questions or share experiences.
Register below for the Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning book club by January 12th. Space is limited.
Registration is now open for UNIV*6800 University Teaching Theory and Practice for the Winter 2024 semester via WebAdvisor. The course is open to graduate students, postdoctoral students, staff, sessionals, and faculty. The course will meet virtually on Tuesdays from 8:30 AM – 11:20 AM.
UNIV*6800 is a graduate-level course that focuses on the relationship between pedagogical theory and instructional practice. Topics include critical reflection and reflective practice, active learning, the scholarship of teaching and learning, learner-centered pedagogy, lesson planning and constructive alignment, universal design, and assessment. Learners will also develop and deliver a micro-teaching lesson, give and receive peer feedback, and develop their approach to becoming a reflective instructional practitioner.
