Salmonella Syst-OMICS: Applying the One Health approach for improved food safety

Salmonella enterica is a bacterial zoonotic pathogen of global importance that causes approximately 80 million cases of foodborne illness each year. Transmission dynamics of Salmonella from livestock to humans, from livestock to the environment and from the environment to humans are complex, and a systematic approach must be applied in order to reduce the burden of human salmonellosis.  A systematic approach to controlling salmonella in humans, animals and the environment has been developed using genomics-based approaches. This Syst-OMICS approach will be discussed with examples of how it is being applied to reduce the burden and duration of foodborne salmonellosis.

Dr. Goodridge is the Leung Family Professor of Food Safety in the Department of Food Science at the University of Guelph. He is also Director of the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Program and Director of the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety.

Join us on Friday, March 26th, 1:00 to 2:00 via Zoom using the following link

This is our last seminar of the winter semester, please join us again in the fall. Thank you again to Dr. Cate Dewey, Dr. Emily Denstedt, Dr. Kat Fair, Dr. Daniel Gillis and Dr. Lawrence Goodridge for your contributions to the winter seminar series!

The Robert W. Woolner Undergraduate Summer Research Studentship is designed to offer an experiential learning opportunity in research to two University of Guelph undergraduate students interested in One Health. The Woolner Studentship is valued at $8,000 for 14 weeks (35 hours per week). Successful student applicants must be a full-time University of Guelph student in good standing who is registered in Phase 1 or 2 of the DVM program, or after 2nd or 3rd year of a related University of Guelph undergraduate program and returning in the fall.

Applications are still being accepted for the following undergraduate summer research project (until April 2nd):

Prof. Amy Newman (Integrative Biology): Effects of environmental modification and early-life stress on wildlife physiology and biodiversity.

Please check the One Health website for details

Dr. Heather Murphy's Research on the Effects of Microbes in Well Water

A black & white closeup photo of water dripping out of a tap.

Dr. Heather Murphy, who recently joined OVC’s Department of Pathobiology as a Canada Research Chair in One Health, will explore illness-causing microbes in residential well water in southeastern Pennsylvania, the impacts on families with young children and the effectiveness of home water treatment systems.

Dr. Murphy says that public safeguards don’t apply to privately owned wells, where water quality testing is the responsibility of individual owners, and the prevalence of waterborne diseases can threaten residents’ health.

The research has a local connection in that VIQUA, Trojan Technologies’ domestic water system brand, is manufactured locally in Guelph. They will be producing and donating the UV water treatment systems used in the study! Read more about Dr. Murphy's research at U of G News.

International Conference on One Health, London, UK, May 24-25, 2022

The International Conference on One Health aims to bring together leading academic scientists, researchers and research scholars to exchange and share their experiences and research results on all aspects of One Health. It also provides an interdisciplinary platform for researchers, practitioners and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the fields of One Health.

The Abstract Deadline is April 1, 2021!

Students interested in combining One Health and rural planning and development should consider the Master of Science in Rural Planning and Development with a Collaborative Specialization in One Health. Applications for the fall semester are due March 31, 2021. For more info, visit the M.Sc. program homepage.

New! One Health Seminar on YouTube : Dr. Kathyrn Fair

Our newest One Health seminar featuring Dr. Kathyrn Fair is now on YouTube.

Physical Distancing, School/Workplace Closure & COVID-19 Disease Burden: How Many Lives Did We Save?

A photograph of a squirrel in winter sitting on the branch of a tree next to the trunk

To combat transmission of SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic, workplaces and schools have undergone closures and Ontarians have been asked to engage in physical distancing. In this seminar, you will be introduced to a mathematical model describing the impact of COVID-19 in Ontario and see how it can be used to examine the effects of closures and distancing in reducing case numbers and deaths resulting from COVID-19.

Dr. Fair is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on gaining insights into the dynamics of complex systems using mathematical models, and exploring questions related to climate change, infectious diseases, and sustainability.

New Faculty Focus Articles!:

We have been busy releasing Faculty Focus articles with stories about professors all across our campus. Check them out!

Dr. Philip Loring

Traditional Grazing Practice a Win-Win for Community and Cattle

Did you know that the key to ecosystem health in parts of Ireland is the winter grazing of cattle? The cattle provide fertilizer, control shrubs and are then removed so as not to disturb plants during the growing season. Prof. Philip Loring, Arrell Chair in Food, Policy, and Society, and a faculty member in the Department of Geography, is inspired when people work towards a point where their health and well-being is closely coupled with the health of the land around them.

Dr. Andrew Bailey

Consciousness Defies Every Form of Measurement, says Professor

How do we build a conceptual framework for consciousness, to better understand it? Prof. Andrew Bailey, a One Health Institute affiliate member and Associate Dean of Research in the College of Arts, finds consciousness interesting because while it has an intrinsic nature and value, it cannot be fully described through its relationship to other things.

He believes that by understanding consciousness we also begin to understand mental health, how we interact with each other and our environment and that it might even lead to a new stream of health treatments.
