Sydney Pearce Announced As New ISOHA One Health Journal Editor

Sydney Pearce, a University of Guelph PhD Candidate in Epidemiology with a Collaborative Specialization in One Health and President of the University of Guelph's One Health Student Committee, has been selected by the International Student One Health Alliance (ISOHA) as their 2020-2021 journal editor!

As a journal editor, she will be putting together, editing, and publishing the new ISOHA One Health Journal, as well as occasionally hosting online journal club sessions where you can post your thoughts on One Health papers. Journal submissions will be opening up shortly and anything ranging from One Health research papers, to commentaries, to creative works (e.g., art, poetry) will be considered.

If you'd like to stay up to date on Sydney's work, the upcoming journal submission call, or the online international journal club, you can follow the ISOHA Facebook page, journal club Facebook learning unit, or join the listserv.

Jamie Goltz Attends the Virtual World One Health Congress

Jamie Goltz, recipient of the first-ever University of Guelph One Health Student Committee (OHSC) World One Health Congress Scholarship, attended the Congress from her home last week.

This is what Jamie had to say:

"I'm so grateful for this experience where I got to attend the 6th Annual One Health Congress 2020. This experience has taught me about many different ways that researchers around the world are using a One Health framework to tackle complex health issues. I can't wait to use the knowledge I've gained from this opportunity in my project here at the University of Guelph, as well as in future research!"

The University of Guelph One Health Student Committee (OHSC) is hosting their next (Net)Working Wednesday Virtual Meetup. This series connects students with leaders from academia, government, and industrial entities who are tackling issues using a One Health approach.

The upcoming meetup will feature Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Population Disease Modeling and Associate Professor in the Department of Population Medicine, Dr. Amy Greer.

2020 World Antimicrobial Awareness Week

United to preserve antimicrobials

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) aims to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to stop the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections.

As resistance grows to a wider range of drugs, the WHO has broadened the focus of this campaign from antibiotics to all antimicrobials.

One Health recognizes that we can improve life by understanding that the health of animals, humans, and the environment depend on one another. It aims to create solutions that improve health in all three areas and not just one. These types of solutions require people across a variety of sectors and fields to work together.

One Health Seminar & Poster Day

Have you ever wondered…

What is One Health? How can One Health be applied to solve some of the most wicked, real-world challenges? What types of careers are available to a One Health practitioner?

The day gave participants the chance to interactively learn about One Health and its real-world applications across diverse fields as well as explore a cross-section of innovative and exciting research taking place at the interface of human, animal, and environmental health.

This event was presented in collaboration with the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses (CPHAZ) at the University of Guelph and the One Health Program in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University.
