COVID-19 Update: Oct. 9, 2020

U of G's COVID-19 Updates help keep you informed of the University's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. They provide useful information to help you navigate life at U of G throughout the academic year.

Who can get COVID-19 tests on campus?

Student Health Services has made changes to its COVID-19 testing on campus. Following provincial guidelines, as a student, you can book an appointment for COVID-19 testing on campus if:

  • you have at least one symptom, or
  • you have been notified by Public Health or the COVID Alert app that you should be tested, even if you aren't showing symptoms, or
  • you are planning to visit someone in long-term care and are required to first obtain a negative COVID-19 test result.

Some individuals are booking COVID-19 tests hoping that a negative result will mean it is safe to gather over the weekend with those outside their current household. The provincial government currently discourages such testing. Please save on-campus testing appointments for those who may be at risk.

To book a testing appointment, call Student Health Services at 519-824-4120, Ext. 52131.

Getting ready for midterms

As we move into midterm season, make sure you're set up for success! The McLaughlin Library offers a number of resources to help you prepare for exams.

If you have an online midterm:

  • Make sure you have a computer and reliable internet connection.
    • You'll also need a webcam for midterms that use Respondus. It's a good idea to set up your system ahead of time to test that everything works.
  • If you don't have access to the technology you need or you have concerns about your internet connection, email courselink@uoguelph.ca for assistance.
  • If you run into technical issues during your midterm, immediately contact CourseLink support at 519-824-4120, Ext. 56939, or toll-free at 1-866-275-1478 (Canada and U.S.).

Feeling stressed? Contact Student Wellness to access support. A student wellness navigator can help direct you to the best resources for your needs. Call 519-824-4120, Ext. 52131, to get started.

Thanksgiving and paused social circles

On Oct. 2, the Government of Ontario announced that the province is pausing the concept of social circles. This means you should have close contact only with the people in your current household and keep 2 metres apart from people outside of your household. If you had planned for a trip home, you may want to reconsider or make definite plans for how you can keep your family safe while you're home and your housemates safe when you get back.

In an interview earlier this week, Ontario Minister of Health Christine Elliott said, “We need to just really stick to our close household unit so that we can flatten the curve and get out of this second wave."

If you're staying local to help keep your loved ones safe, check out the Student Experience Instagram account. They have great ideas for ways you can stay connected and have a relaxing Thanksgiving break.
