U of G's Set for September emails help you prepare for your classes and experiences this fall. Learn more about making the most of your remote or in-person learning this semester.

What to expect in on-campus classrooms and labs

Our top priority this fall is keeping our community safe. If you're coming to campus for face-to-face classes or labs, there are important safety protocols you need to know. Read the full Fall Classroom Health and Safety Protocols on the Return to Campuses website before your first class for more information.

Some of the changes you can expect are:

  • Classroom monitors on hand for the first four weeks to help you get used to new procedures
  • Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before class to line up
  • Disinfect your learning space using provided supplies before and after class
  • Wear a face covering while on campus, including in the classroom. You will receive two reusable face masks when you arrive for your first class.
  • Follow directional signs for lining up, entering and exiting the classroom, and seating
  • Use your student ID card to access academic buildings and instructional spaces

If you are scheduled for face-to-face labs, learn about the Research Phase-In Framework and how its safety protocols apply to you.

Master the art of remote learning

The McLaughlin Library and U of G's Open Learning and Educational Support team offer resources that can help you make the most of your remote learning experience this fall.

  • Get ready to learn remotely - If you're new to remote learning or want advice on how to make the most of your fall courses, check out OpenEd's advice on etiquette and expectations, participating remotely, taking notes and accessibility.

  • Improve your online learning, testing and presentation - Get tips for adjusting your usual learning, testing and presentation strategies for an online environment.

  • Access library supports and resources from home - You don't need to visit the library in-person to access academic support services. Meet with McLaughlin Library experts online for help accessing library materials, developing your study and presentation skills, connecting with peer-led supported learning groups, learning to work with data and more!

Still not clear on the difference between synchronous and asynchronous learning? Visit the Office of the Registrar's website for definitions.

Accessing your course materials this fall

There are two ways you can access your course material this fall.

University Bookstore

The University Bookstore's course selector tool helps you find materials required for your courses. Even if a course outline isn't yet posted, you may still find its materials through the course selector tool. If materials for some of your courses aren't posted, check back soon. The Bookstore's course selector tool is updated frequently.

The textbook floor of the Bookstore is closed this semester. You must place your textbook order online and then schedule an appointment to pick up your order on campus or have it shipped.

Library E-Reserve

The McLaughlin Library is working with instructors to provide quick access to course materials at the start of the semester.

The ARES Course Reserve system allows instructors to provide enrolled students with access to course materials like textbook excerpts or articles. On the library website, learn how to access online copies of course reserve material through ARES.

Fall 2020 grading structure

Fall 2020 courses will follow U of G's standard grading structure: numeric or letter grades based on the course syllabus. The Pass/Fail grading option was available in winter 2020 only to support students after the unexpected change to alternative delivery formats of courses. If you enrolled in a course with a specific Credit/No Credit grading option, that option still applies this semester.

Access software on library computers without leaving home

Do your courses require you to use specific software that your computer doesn't have or can't run? LabStats Remote Access Dashboard lets you safely connect to McLaughlin Library computers (macOS or Windows) and their wide range of academic and professional software. Get secure access to powerful software programs from off campus through remote access.

Further updates on study space, the countdown to classes and more are coming soon!
