Connect with colleagues across UofG, UofGH, and Ridgetown in any of our five Communities of Practice (CoPs) in the Winter semester. Each CoP offers a supportive, discussion-based space to learn, reflect, share strategies, and deepen your teaching practice. Learn more and register using the links below.
Decolonization, Indigenization, and Reconciliation CoP
The CoP provides a space for educators at all different levels engage in ideas, resources, and activities around DIR, and to discuss their ideas, uncertainties, questions, and best practices around bringing DIR into their teaching and learning environments.
Coffee and Connections for Teaching-Focused Faculty

We are excited to relaunch the newly designed Red Maple Program for Emerging Educators (formerly University Teaching Foundations).
The Red Maple Program offers emerging educators, including teaching assistants, graduate students, post docs, and instructors, a flexible and supportive pathway to deepen their knowledge of teaching and learning in higher education. Rooted in a holistic framework, the program invites educators to explore connections between their experiences as learners, their pedagogical practices, the responsibilities required of them as a TA, and the broader context of teaching and learning at the University of Guelph.
The renaming of OTL’s Foundations program draws inspiration from Maples, which are the leaders of the trees in Anishinabek and Haudenosaunee teachings. Red Maples, in particular, are known for their adaptability and wide spreading roots. In this spirit, the Red Maple Program provides a grounding in a range of topics through a curated mix of elective and required workshops, networking and community-building opportunities, and learning on the land. These teachings help shape the program’s values of flexibility, reflection, and relational learning.
The Red Maple Program can be completed at your own pace, typically within one to two semesters. The program must be completed by the end of your graduate program to earn the Certificate of Completion.
Learn more about the program components on our Red Maple Program website.
UNIV*6800: University Teaching: Theory and Practice is an online synchronous course that focuses on the relationship between pedagogical theory and instructional practice. The course strives for two major competencies; firstly, it introduces participants to the foundational theory in pedagogy and explores recent disciplinary pedagogical theory that informs our instructional practice. Secondly, the course provides an opportunity for participants to develop and deliver a micro-teaching lesson, develop the fundamental skills of providing peer evaluation, and develop their approach to becoming reflective instructional practitioners.
The Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) is an internationally recognized certificate program for instructor development. Our next ISW is taking place during Winter Break on February 17, 18, and 19, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM each day.
The ISW is offered within a small group setting (four to six participants per small group) and is designed to enhance the teaching effectiveness of both new and experienced educators. The ISW encourages reflection and examination of your teaching practices with feedback focused on the learning process rather than on the specific content of the lesson.
The ISW is free to members of the University of Guelph, University of Guelph-Humber, and Ridgetown Campus communities.
Registration closes on January 23. Space is limited.
We are pleased to announce that the full FeedbackFruits system has been adopted by the institution and will be available to all instructors via CourseLink beginning immediately. Thank you to the students, instructors, and staff who have participated in the FeedbackFruits pilot over the last year and provided feedback and suggestions for improvement!
As with any pilot, especially one that covers such a wide variety of activities, we received a mix of feedback, though the majority of what we heard was very positive. FeedbackFruits is committed to working with us to implement additional features and improvements based on feedback from our instructors, and we encourage you to continue to make suggestions through our instructional technology specialist team via email (edtech@uoguelph.ca).
