Recap of Roadmaps to Reconciliation and Reparations Events

Images from the Roadmaps to Reconciliation and Reparations Events

In April, the Office of Teaching and Learning launched Roadmaps to Reconciliation and Reparations, in partnership with the Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society/Black Mecca Musuem and Six Nations Polytechnic.

Led by Cara Loft, Educational Developer for Indigenous Knowledges and Pedagogies, in collaboration with Marsha Myrie Obi (Educational Developer, Anti-Oppressive and Inclusive Pedagogies) and Jade Ferguson (Associate Dean, Academic Equity and Anti-Racism), this initiative brought together non-Indigenous UofG faculty, staff, students, and instructors, with Indigenous and Black communities in Southwestern Ontario. The aim was to begin building bridges towards reconciliation and reparations with Black and Indigenous communities through mutual knowledge sharing and cultural learning.

On April 7, forty-two individuals from across the UofG community visited the Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society and Black Mecca Museum. Dr. Dierdre McCorkindale led us on a historic Black neighborhood tour in Chatham-Kent, where we learned about the abolitionist history and local black heroes. We also visited the First Black Baptist Church and participated in a museum activity titled “Will They Run?”.

On April 23, forty-eight individuals travelled to Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP). The visit began with dancing and singing by Indigenous Youth from the Everlasting Tree School on Six Nations, followed by an invitation for us to dance with the youth! We also heard from Indigenous learners about their experiences in post-secondary education and learned about SNP’s facilities and programs.

Overall, the Roadmaps to Reconciliation and Reparations initiative was a meaningful success, fostering connections that will support future collaborations between UofG and Indigenous and Black communities.

This event was made possible through the EDI Enhancement Fund, and funding from Indigenous Initiatives, the College of Biological Sciences, the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, the College of Arts Interdisciplinary Programs, The University of Guelph Bookstore, and the Guelph Arboretum.
